Oh my word

“I plunged into this thing lightly enough, partly because you were too persuasive, and mostly, I honestly think, because that scurrilous Gordon Hallock laughed so uproariously at the idea of my being able to manage an asylum.” Dear Enemy, Chapter 2.

Our word is “scurrilous.” Meaning in this sense “characterized by or using low buffoonery; coarsely jocular or derisive.” It is pronounced “skur-uh-luhs.” It doesn’t much sound like a good thing so don’t you be scurrilous this week, you hear?
